After a grey week spent to-ing and fro-ing from one event to another, I awoke on Sunday to glorious sunshine and the first day off in two weeks. With ‘Hardy’ like weather matching the joy of the weekend, a seaside February picnic beckoned. Little did we know how dramatic our trip would be as an RAF rescue helicopter gave a stunning show of mastery, dipping low over the shoreline and practicing air and sea rescue. After much excitement and a sandblasting from the eroding cliff, the airmen waved a final goodbye and looped out to sea, leaving my six year old occupied for the duration of our picnic, spotting which speck on the horizon was the helicopter!

With tingling fingers, wind slapped cheeks and a panting puppy, tired from barking at the waves, we stepped onto the smooth sandy beach, peppered with shells and stones. For us no trip to the seaside is complete without foraging for fossils and shells and so an argument ensued between my six and nine year old about one particular find. ‘I want the poo’. ‘No, it’s mine’, ‘Give me the horse poo!’ The subject of their battle was a heavy rounded object with smooth nodules, bearing a remarkable similarity to a fossilised hose poo! With careful negotiation, the nine year old secured this as a trophy in return for trading a large, complete whelk shell with pearlescent inside. The day was rounded off by a trip to a play area and brisk walk along the pier. I was intrigued to overhear a father playfully explaining to his children how they were going to walk along the beach to the cafe for a nice cup of tea. A suggestion met with disdain as his four (?) year old exclaimed ‘Oh, a boring walk then.’ I may be rose-tinting my childhood but can’t quite believe that the announcement of a trip to the seaside would have been greeted with anything other than excitement and joy. Reflecting upon our own trip, that nearly never was – neither child had been keen to leave the comfort of the house, they recounted their many favourite bits of the day and how they didn’t want to leave. If only I could bottle that feeling to avoid future battles!

I was showing my children something I’d spotted whilst dog walking the previous day. ‘Wow!’ exclaimed the nine year old. ‘It’s the best thing in the world’ said the six year old. The object of their awe and wonder was dozens of rounded stalagmite mounds on a ledge formed by frozen rivulets of ice running down a four storey building. Like a bunch of glass grapes, glistening and perfectly formed, each smooth nodule measured no more than a couple of centimetres high, formed from fat drops of water falling from the broken gutter above. Next to the bumpy mounds a thin layer of ice coated nearby bricks, from splashes I presume. This could be satisfyingly broken off into wafer thin slices. The nine year old wistfully shared how she wished she could keep the formations, then shouted ‘Wait here’ as she rushed home to get a hammer, returning moments later with a small hammer and chisel. Together we carefully chipped away the nodules which the children eagerly transported home. With boots still on they raided the kitchen cupboards in search of food colouring, then watched mesmerised at the effects. The amazing ‘glass’ nodules simply bathed in a pool of colour, but a thinner piece of ice, with a crackled-like appearance did not disappoint. One drop of vivid red dye formed a ‘blood clot’ which quickly spread across its surface through the capillary-like ‘veins’. Another colour was added at the other end and we watched transfixed by the unfurling fingers of colour reaching towards each other. This sparked a flurry of activity as the children decided to rope in their father to help them bring back more of the exciting stuff. With more crackled slabs and spectators, further experiments yielded more drama and surprise, as well as some unsightly red stained fingers! The precious stained pieces of ice were carefully wrapped in sandwich bags and stored in the freezer ‘for keeping’. Who would have thought that a leaking gutter could spark such a flurry of excitement, satisfaction and exploration? Children and playful adults of course!

If you’re not of an age when you have to worry about slipping over and doing yourself an injury, then snow is simply the best. It can really bring out the child in adults. My husband had to reassure me that there would be more snow on Sunday as I was ready to wake the children up late Saturday night so that they wouldn’t miss out on christening their new sledges! There was no mistaking their feelings about snow from the huge shriek of joy as they looked out of their windows in the morning. And despite spending most of the day outside, our not so puppy dog spent the rest of the day wimpering on the window cill at the sight of all that fun fluffy stuff! Before breakfast we frolicked in the garden enjoying the footprint –free blanket of snow. I couldn’t resist leading the way in doing snow angels in the fresh snow and chasing round the garden, calf deep with my children and our ‘puppy’. I don’t think I’ve seen as many families out walking on a summer day, so why does snow make us adults so playful and keen to get outside, whereas rain tends to have the opposite effect on most adults (myself included)?

With the right clothes and most importantly the right attitude we too can embrace children’s love of all weather, seeing rain as the provider of irresistible puddles, intriguing rivulets, splashes and drips. It also offers an all round sensory experience, from the gushing coldness felt through wellies or clammy wetness from overzealous splashing; the oozing warmth of mud and its gloopy sound; the fresh smell of damp grass; the rhythmic sound of beating rain; and the dripping plops of fat raindrops. I’ve made a pact that next time it starts raining, rather than huddling inside I’m going to don my waterproofs with gusto and make the most of the abundant weather!

Happy New Year! I know it’s nearly February but with the lergy over Christmas and my book manuscript finally submitted, this weekend was definitely a time for celebration! It’s been a journey which I have thoroughly enjoyed as I’ve probed and discovered more about the world of objects and sensory-rich play. Like the exploratory hand positions that we instinctively use as adults to find out more about objects which may have their origin in children’s explorative play, young children’s hands and mouths are critical to their exploration and understanding of the world around them. From time to time we get a glimpse of this deeply rooted connection. If you’ve ever seen a child or adult poke out their tongue whilst concentrating on writing or doing something challenging then you will have witnessed this in action. Having researched and written about children’s full-bodied play and learning I saw this first hand when I sat reading with my nearly six year old. As he carefully decoded the writing on the page, he wriggled and squirmed, rolled and stretched, bent and twisted his body into any number of positions and shapes. As he contorted he literally spelt out the words with his body on the floor.

With the final consultation on the EYFS over and the new framework expected in the Spring, it is hard to see how the emphasis upon school readiness and educational programmes will make learning more accessible for those, like my little boy, who thrive on full-bodied learning. Children are quick to pick up cues about what constitutes work and play and like it or not, sat still reading at a table with an adult present, invariably points to work rather than play. Whitebread et al (2011) suggest that the question shouldn’t be’ is the child ready for school?’ but ‘is the school environment [and that includes our own attitudes], ready for children?’ Sat watching his own unique approach to reading, the answer I fear is ‘no’.

At teatime on Saturday my eight year old announced that she had set up a new business. Its name ‘Frantic Shredding’ hints at the concept, a mobile waste paper shredding service. Inspired by the purchase of a mini shredder for 20p at a charity fete earlier that day, she negotiated business through a well-conceived two-tier pricing strategy and a good appraisal of the market -she knew how many boxes of waste paper I had! A deal struck, she and her five year old brother proceeded to set up a production line, with him tearing the A4 paper into shreddable pieces while she turned the shredder handle. The pair then emptied the shreds into recycling bags before swapping roles. After 20 minutes of concerted shredding they decamped to the lounge for Strictly Dancing, after all it was a mobile service! Shredding whilst watching the dancing, they sat for over an hour working their way through the box of paper. During this time they agreed to split the profits, £2.50 each, decided how they’d spend their earnings and displayed heaps of focus, determination and teamwork.

If anyone was in any doubt about children’s ability to concentrate or the potential for almost anything to spark creativity and imagination, not just all singing all dancing toys, then that 20p shredder suggests otherwise. And the creativity for those budding entrepreneurs did not stop there, as some partially shredded paper inspired my eight year old to create mini dolls with pretty fringed skirts. This in turn sparked more ideas as both children fashioned creations from shredded paper. That could so easily have signalled the end to the shredding, but not so, as both resumed their mission the next day, roping Grandma in in the process! And so we’re off to the shops after school today to buy Pudsey bears, the inspiration behind Frantic Shredding!

Travelling back from the amazing TACTYC Conference this weekend in York, I arrived at my parents in law’s house in Norfolk, deep in a power cut. Having debated the whole school readiness issue and easily concluded that the vital question is not whether children are ready to learn but what? (Whitebread, D. and Bingham, S. 2011) it was great to see a spontaneous and fun learning and play opportunity evolve. On arrival in the candlelit kitchen the children had hidden in the gloomy shadow of the table, only jumping out with a ‘boo’ when I least expected them. Shrieks of laughter ensued as they played hide and seek in the shadows of granny and grandads house. The arrival of a large specialised vehicle with double cherry picker on an extendable arm was good enough reason for us to decant to the street. There the children sat mesmerised on the dark pavement watching the spectacle unfold. They marvelled as the vehicle legs jacked the crane up and two power line repairmen climbed into the cherrypicker, the manoeuvrability of which caused lots of interest and discussion. They chatted to the ground based electrician, asking probing questions to better understand what was happening. They shared their knowledge of the dangers of electricity and explained to me, aged five and eight years, why the two men would not be electrocuted, (because the crane was insulated). As time edged past 9.30 the children were persuaded to come back in the house for bedtime. Not wishing for the experience to end, but fighting off tiredness my eight year old remembered the pass the parcel present she’d won earlier that day at a party. We rushed in the house to fetch it and she plucked up the courage to ask the two workers from the cherry picker to sign her new autograph book! Back in the house feeling really tired the children quickly succumbed to bed and us adults ate a candlelit tea.

With busy lives and routines it’s so easy to miss the sense of awe and wonder of occasions like these for children. A powercut turned into a magical evening of spooky tea and hide and seek games. The visitors in high vis jackets with their amazing equipment, sparked discussion over hydraulics, vehicles and safety. Returning to the issue of school readiness, moments like this make us realise the importance of changing the emphasis of the debate. Instead of focussing on whether children are ready for school let’s consider instead whether school is ready for them? Opportunities like these clearly won’t be available in schools, but the daily weather, seasons, visitors from the community and so on all give opportunities for children to extend their knowledge and make the links to real life. In doing so they tick several curriculum boxes too! If I was observing that night I would have evidenced elements of personal social and emotional development, communication, problem solving, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical and creative development. Not bad for a spontaneous night in the dark!

I heard an inspirational speaker today. Dean Beadle delivered a charismatic, funny and impactful presentation at the 2011 SEN Conference. Retelling some of his childhood experiences in a primary school, pre-aspergers diagnosis, I found myself wishing that my eight year old could be there to hear him. Yes he had a great message for those working with children with special educational needs, but more, much more than this, he spoke of the importance of getting to know children as people, understanding their needs as children and having high expectations of them, personal mantras of my own. Too often we can unintentionally impose glass ceilings on children’s potential, making assumptions and second guessing their abilities. What Dean powerfully showed was that with determination and vision we can succeed in whatever we want to. And Dean should know, labelled ‘a monster’ at six years of age he recently retired from the circuit of after dinner speaking to pursue his other interests and talents of which journalism is just one. For anyone doubting their ability or wondering whether it’s worth persevering with a challenge, a motivational speech like that should leave them in no doubt. So it’s back to book writing for me, reenergised and inspired by the sights and sounds of the day and my eight year olds latest short novel, who makes writing seem childs play.

Last weekend was the annual charity book sale – an essential date in fellow book lover’s diaries from around the region. With my love of books definitely evident in my children, they eagerly gathered their pennies together and begged that we could stay there all day. Watching children in control is a wonderful sight and after an initial reckie of the books and reappraisal of their pickings, they each made their careful decisions on how to spend £3.50. As they proudly queued and paid, then leafed through their books on the way home, both children remarked upon their lovely trip out, helped by a hunk each of homemade cake!

Looking through ‘my’ books later I discovered a real gem that has relevance for the current debate on ‘school readiness’. Activity Methods for Children Under Eight, published in 1962, covers the topical issue of transforming formal teaching environments into child-led environments. In marked contrast to the current emphasis upon school readiness, ‘educational programmes’ and ‘preparing early years children for school’, the aim then was for ‘intelligent, full living’ children. The need for ‘ample time for children to undertake everything at their own pace’ was recognised. Practitioners were urged not to compete with the distraction of extreme weather but rather to harness its appeal as a tool for bringing the curriculum to life. The importance of ‘real investigations which stimulate thought and reasoning’, such as melting snow and ice, were also cited as great tools for enriching learning through play. With the Early Years Foundation Stage in a flux following its Review, and the prospect of a fundamental shift in approach to learning and play in danger of becoming a reality, there can be no better, nor timelier reminder of the important things in life than the image of surplus blackboards converted by a school carpenter into deep sand trays for play and exploration!

If we obsess too much with targets and education, as the revised EYFS threatens to do, then we risk the danger of destroying children’s zest for life and all it offers as well as labelling them failures before they’ve barely started on life’s rich journey. For evidence of this I need look no further than my then four year old, bought up in an environment free of pressures and yet still anxious about starting school because in his words ‘I can’t yet read or write.’ Returning to that same child aged five, still learning to read and write but buzzing with a love for books and I’m almost tempted to get busy with a blackboard, anyone for sandplay?!

After two blog-free weeks thought I’d better put pen to paper. Usually full of energy I’m wondering whether the events of the last two weeks, namely my birthday followed by three shows over five consecutive days, have taken their toll! With no plans for the holiday, or work contingencies sorted, the first day of half term started well with lovely fresh autumnal weather. Ever keen to combine fun and memorable times for my five and eight year old, whilst ideally also ticking off something on my endless to-do list, a trip to see Queenie and the other gorgeous ladies at the centre that makes the wonderful teddies, scrunchies, balls and purses, was planned. It’s always so lovely to see the volunteers and team of knitters and there’s a real buzz as they catch up with their young visitors.

It’s not unusual for Queenie to break out into song, normally ‘I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts’ but today it was magical as a medley of classics from Daisy to Tipperary and How much is that Doggy to 10 Green Bottles were chorused by all the men and women at the centre, volunteers and members, together with my children. The atmosphere was festive and amazing. The adults with physical disabilities were visibly touched by the experience, the children beaming at the spontaneous choir that unfolded before them. Talking later about our favourite things in the day, visiting Queenie was my five year olds answer – not bad for a day of two trips to the park, playing with friends, a picnic and a rare meal of chicken nuggets! And if anyone was ever in doubt at the power of music to uplift spirits and build bonds, that rendition of Twinkle Twinkle said it all!

Marion Dowling talks of children experiencing ‘disequilibrium’ when they encounter something they don’t expect. This can leave them feeling momentarily ‘disorientated’ whilst their brain and body tries to work it out, but each time it occurs, their learning moves to another level. As adult’s, often in a rush with eyes prone to miss the detail that fascinates young children, it’s easy to lose touch with what this might feel like. Walking to school this afternoon in the balmy heat I experienced one such moment. As I made my way up a steep path beneath a canopy of trees I sensed that something wasn’t right. Not in an alarming way, but in a ‘can’t quite put my finger on it way’. I suddenly realised what it was, the ground was thick with autumn leaves, crisp and dry underfoot, yet the weather was gloriously hot and certainly not what you’d expect in October.

Deeply engaged in research into sensory processing difficulties, this moment of discombobulation has parallels with the sensory information mis-match that many children and adults experience on a daily basis. For me fortunately those crunchy leaves were a mere fleeting distraction. For many people with sensory processing difficulties, constant bombardment and overload; conflicting sensory information; and lack of integration must cause at best a challenge and at worst, discomfort and pain. Our brain it seems thrives on moments of disequilibrium, but only when this is the exception rather than the norm.
